When you think of "exit only" signs, you may be inclined to think of the last time you accidentally exited the freeway because you were stuck in a lane that didn't allow you to merge back onto the freeway. An exit only sign inside a building or structure marks a door that is only meant as an exit.

The Exit Only Door: It's not a front door; it is not a grand entrance. It is a release valve, which serves an important role during any emergency. Should you go through it, you may find yourself locked out of the building. In the course of business, that might be a problem but not in a fire. These doors are not meant for coming and going. The message is a little softer than an "Emergency Exit Only" sign. It seems to suggest the same duty (exiting) but without the necessary emergency causation. Still, "Exit Only" signs are great for emergency, because they state their purpose loud and clear in leading people to safety. They are not intended for regular traffic, but will serve many people at once in clearing out the building.
